Referral Requirements for Medicare Advantage Plans: Open Enrollment Ends March 31, 2026

VCS wants to share an important insurance requirement that may affect your care.

Some Medicare Advantage plans now require a referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP) before you can be seen at our office. This requirement is specific to certain plans, including the UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage HMO plan. Many patients who selected this new plan are unaware that referrals are required.

It is very important that you work with your PCP to obtain the necessary referral before your appointment. Without a referral, your visit may be delayed or may not be covered by your plan.

Our office will gladly work with both you and your PCP to help obtain the required referral; however, your proactive involvement is essential to avoid delays in your care.

If you would prefer a plan that does not require referrals, you may revisit your plan selection and make changes during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 through March 31, 2026.

If you have questions about your plan or need assistance, please contact our office. We are here to help ensure your care continues as smoothly as possible.
